This listing is for 5 grams of rough Ethiopian Welo Opals. The opals vary in shape and size and each lot will contain a slight difference in number. However, I have hand-selected the lots to include different color variations, shapes and sizes, making sure you get a satisfying bunch!

Ethiopian Welo Opals are water element stones whose name derives from the Sanskrit word upala meaning “precious stone”. Opals are a stone with many lore’s and are considered stones of magic, good luck and hope. Ethiopian Opals were seen by the ancient Greeks to give them the gift of prophecy and protection. They are believed to boost creativity, are excellent for psychic development and assist in the way you think and make decisions.

Most of the opals that are mined in Ethiopia, from the Welo deposits, are hydrophane opals. "Hydrophane" is the type of porous opal that can absorb water. With the water absorption, a change in color or transparency is likely to occur. These opals typically have a lower specific gravity than other types of opal because of their porosity. Some of these opals can absorb enough water to produce a weight gain of up to 15%. Note: Don’t get these opals wet….unless that’s part of an experiment you are conducting!
