Ammolite is a beautiful organic stone that's formed from aragonites inside the fossilized shells of Ammonites. Wonder what an Ammonite is? They were shelled cephalopods that went extinct 66 million years ago. Fossils of Ammonites are found all around the world but the gem quality called, Ammolites are found in Alberta to Saskatchewan in Canada and in Montana. Cataclysmic volcanic activity from the growing rocky mountains eventually slowly settled on the ocean floor, killing all life below and sealed their remains in a heavy impermeable layer of mineral rich clay. High concentrations of Iron and Magnesium in the volcanic ash created a condition that caused changes to the oxidization process that converted the aragonite of the ammonite shell causing an array of patterns of iridescent colors.
